The Philippines is a predominantly Catholic Country so most families and businesses will be observing Holy Week this week.

Tomorrow is Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday, which honors the Last Super of Jesus Christ with the Apostles.  Which makes today Holy Wednesday and the day after tomorrow Good Friday.

This week is treated with the utmost respect and no business operation may commence during Holy Week.  Fasts are observed and local television and radio stations cease broadcast.  In fact, most cities close and people travel to the country to observe the holiday.

This is the week of the street procession, the Way of the Cross, ending with a Passion Play called the Sinakulo.  The Church does not ring its bells and mass is not celebrated.  At 3pm on Good Friday, all is still.  Radio and television stations sign off and silence observed.

Easter morning is a huge celebration in which large statue of Jesus and Mary are brought into procession and meet. This is celebrate the meeting of the Virgin Mary and Jesus after his Resurrection.  An Easter Mass follows the procession.  More about food next week.
