This traditional outfit surely embraces our culture and the many riches of our historic ethnicity.
The national outfit of the Philippines, made out of pineapple leaf fibers, is distinct and one that is specially embroidered and lightweight. It is called Barong Tagalog and is used at formal occasions such as weddings, conferences and functions, etc. It was made popular by President Ramon Magsaysay who himself wore it at his own inauguration.
The word "barong" is derived from the root word "baro" which means outfit and the suffix - "ng" makes it an adjective. Therefore, the literal meaning is "Tagalog outfit". In modern times, people have shortened the term and call it "Barong".
There is something dignified and special about wearing Barong Tagalog. It is worn untucked with a plain white undershirt paired with dark pants and dark leather shoes. Though it is known as a national outfit, it is most often worn by the middle to upper class. More often than not, it spoke of status.
